Seattle’s new waterfront is taking shape

July 18, 2022

We shifted traffic onto the new Alaskan Way between Marion and Union streets, focusing construction in this area for the future park promenade – the core of the new waterfront!

October 19, 2022

We are improving a key connection to Colman Dock with the new Marion Street Pedestrian Bridge. The project kicked off with the construction of V-shaped concrete columns that will support the bridge deck. In October, falsework over Alaskan Way went up to begin work on the bridge.

November 16, 2022

Following inspections, we removed the remaining piles at Pier 58. Afterwards, we started piledriving to install the new steel piles.

December 7, 2022

In October we began removal of Pier 63 and completed removal two months later, in December.

The Union Street Pedestrian Bridge was completed and opened to the public on December 9, 2022!

Construction on Overlook Walk has been busy. We have built 17 multi-story concrete columns that’ll support the bridges, placed pre-cast concrete beams, installed shoring towers to support the false deck, constructed the “false deck” for workers and the installation of forms, installed hourglass shape curved foam forms and began placing concrete on the upper deck.

*Waterfront Seattle construction was delayed into 2025 due to COVID-19 impacts and a lack of concrete delivery availability between December 2021 and April 2022 as a result of a concrete strike in King County. We have assessed the overall program delay impacts to implement mitigation strategies. The schedule below is in the process of being updated to reflect our current construction timeline, updates will be live on this page soon.

Construction of the park promenade, a landscaped walking space along the water and piers, and the bike facility, between the park promenade and road, will begin by fall 2022.
Construction of the portion of the Marion Street Pedestrian Bridge that crosses Alaskan Way, to improve an essential pedestrian connection to Colman Dock, is anticipated to begin in summer 2022.
Construction of Overlook Walk, a new elevated pedestrian connection between Pike Place Market and the waterfront, is anticipated to begin in summer 2022.
Construction of Pier 58 rebuild, previously known as Waterfront Park, which has been redesigned to create a larger public space and improve access, safety and flexibility to the pier, is anticipated to begin in fall 2022.
Alaskan Way and Elliott Way roadway and bridge expected to open to vehicle traffic as early as the end of 2022, but may push into early 2023.
Construction of the new Union Street Pedestrian Bridge is anticipated to be completed in late 2022.

Construction of pedestrian improvements to some east/west streets in the heart of Pioneer Square, which will reconnect this historic neighborhood back to the city’s gateway to the Puget Sound, is anticipated to begin in early 2023.
Construction of improvements on Pike and Pine streets, which will set the stage for a safe and vibrant pedestrian experience from Capitol Hill to Pike Place Market, is anticipated to begin in early 2023.
Marion Street Bridge expected to open in late 2023.
Colman Dock construction is expected to be complete in late 2023.
